Why Wokeness Matters When You Buy Books

Few industries shape culture as directly as publishing, and few are as concentrated: a handful of big New York houses dominate what reaches bookstore shelves, and the largest of them, Penguin Random House, maintains formal diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments across its hiring and publishing programs. Those policies are now under scrutiny: in December 2025, America First Legal asked the EEOC to investigate Penguin Random House, alleging the publisher's DEI hiring practices discriminate by race and sex — an allegation, not a legal finding. So while much of corporate America rolled back DEI programs in 2025, the industry's largest player has publicly maintained its commitments, which means the dollars you spend at the register can still flow toward activism you may not support.
