Financial Contributions to Progressive Causes
Let’s start with the money, shall we? According to OpenSecrets, Valero has been writing checks – over $3 million to political candidates, PACs, and committees in recent years. However,  they’ve been giving to Democrats and Republicans, which means they’re hedging their bets and ensuring they’re covered no matter who’s in power.

Their Political Participation page even states their support for candidates that align with their business goals, community engagement and industry priorities. They’re not necessarily pushing woke agendas but ensuring they stay on the good side of whoever can help their bottom line.

Still, a quick peek at their community programs and American Democracy Scorecard shows some support for policies advocating racial equity and climate change. They might not be waving the woke flag, but they’re dabbling.
Prioritization of DEI Policies
Valero's Racial Equity Assessment Letter gives us a good look at what they’re up to: "Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is a fundamental part of our culture and is embedded in our business strategy. We believe diverse perspectives lead to better decision-making and stronger business performance."

They’re not enforcing rigid identity-based hiring quotas. Instead, they’re focusing on building a diverse pipeline of talent. That’s like saying, “Hey, we want to be inclusive, but we’re not going to throw merit out the window.”
Mandatory Training Sessions
So, what about those infamous training sessions on topics like unconscious bias and critical race theory? You know, the ones that make you sit there and question every interaction you’ve ever had? There is no evidence of mandatory training sessions, at least not in the open. 
Support for LGBTQ+ Initiatives
Their 2023 ESG Report mentions that they’re all about fostering a “safe, respected, and valued” environment for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. They’ve even got healthcare coverage for domestic partners and gender-affirming care, as highlighted in their 2022 ESG Report.

Valero’s quietly supportive. They’re not plastering rainbow flags on social media or sponsoring every Pride event in town.
Marketing and Branding
If a company’s woke, they’ll make it loud and clear in their marketing. So what’s Valero up to? Their Marketing Mix tells us they’re more interested in discussing energy solutions, sustainability, and innovation.

Their Advancing Future Energy supports the following: "Our focus is on providing sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy solutions that drive progress and support the well-being of our communities." News Room also sticks to the script of business achievements, community involvement, and sustainability. There are no social justice slogans or climate change guilt trips here.
Conclusion
Valero Energy isn’t waving a woke banner exactly, but it’s dipped its toes in the water a few times. It supports DEI and LGBTQ+ initiatives, but it’s not out there preaching.

Their marketing? Strictly business. Mandatory training? Nowhere to be found. If you’re looking for a brand that isn’t pushing the woke agenda down your throat, Valero might just be worth your attention.
