How woke is Kroger?

Introduction

If you’ve shopped at Kroger lately, you might be wondering: has your local grocery store gone full-blown woke? As one of America’s largest grocery chains, Kroger has made quite the name for itself in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

From its financial contributions to marketing and hiring practices, Kroger seems to be waving the woke flag high. But does this mean it’s standing up for genuine progress, or is it simply pandering to the woke crowd? Let’s dig in and find out.

Financial Contributions to Progressive Causes

According to OpenSecrets, Kroger has been active politically, making donations to both sides of the aisle. But in recent years, they’ve leaned a little heavier on the progressive side. This tilt suggests they’re not just stocking your pantry but investing in agendas pushing social justice and climate activism.

Their community engagement page is pretty telling. Kroger showcases its commitment to initiatives that hit all the right woke buzzwords: social equity, racial justice, and the like. You can check out their community initiatives page to see for yourself

Prioritization of DEI Policies

In 2020, Kroger launched their “Framework for Action: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Plan”. Their words, not mine: “Kroger is dedicated to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment for all.” They say they’re all about uplifting associates, customers, and communities.

Kroger has earned the highest possible score on the Disability Equality Index, showcasing our efforts in advancing an inclusive workplace.  Their supplier inclusion program has also been implemented to ensure their business partnerships are as diverse as a rainbow.

Mandatory Training Sessions

Kroger has rolled out individualized learning platforms, which it is rolling out in phases, to educate workers about how to recognize fresh produce and about the company’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

Senchal Murphy, senior director of training and onboarding at The Kroger Co., said that part of the purpose of  ‘Clock in, app up’ is to engage associates in training on diversity and unconscious bias, ensuring that everyone is educated about the importance of inclusivity.

Support for LGBTQ+ Initiatives

Having earned stripes within the LGBTQ+ community, Kroger has been recognized as one of the “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality” for three years. Their consistency in celebrating Pride ensures everyone knows they stand with the LGBTQ+ community.

However, there’s a darker side to this rainbow. Remember when Kroger fired two employees for refusing to wear an apron with what they felt was a Pride flag logo? That decision cost them a cool $180,000 in a settlement, as reported by NBC News. Regarding standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, Kroger’s motto is, “Get with the program or get out.”

Marketing and Branding

Kroger’s marketing crafts campaigns about inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability. Their slogan, “Fresh for Everyone,” is part of their mission to ensure that everyone feels like they belong in their stores, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Their ads feature folks from every race, background and lifestyle.

Conclusion

Kroger has embraced the progressive agenda with open arms. Kroger fits the bill if you’re looking for a brand that’s woke to the core. But you might want to steer your cart elsewhere if you’re after a company that respects traditional values and lets people hold their beliefs.
