How woke is Dow?

Introduction

Dow Inc., a giant in the world of chemical manufacturing, has long been a household name for innovation in chemistry and material science. However, the company’s growing involvement in social justice movements and progressive causes has raised some eyebrows in recent years. From their financial contributions to their emphasis on DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), we’ll break down where Dow stands on the woke spectrum and whether it aligns with traditional values.

Financial Contributions to Progressive Causes

Let’s start with the money trail. The company’s Global Citizenship program openly funds initiatives tied to climate change and social responsibility, proudly boasting about its efforts to “tackle the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges, including climate change and plastic waste reduction.”

OpenSecrets also reports that Dow donated over $1 million in the 2022 election cycle, largely supporting candidates pushing climate change legislation. For some consumers, this could be a red flag. Dow is committed to science and innovation, putting its weight behind politically charged issues.

Prioritization of DEI Policies

Next, discuss Dow’s approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In today’s corporate world, DEI is almost synonymous with being woke, and Dow is leading the charge. The company’s 2022 Progress Report highlights its goal to “foster a culture where every individual, regardless of race, gender, or background, has the opportunity to thrive.” That’s not all; Dow ranked an impressive seventh in DiversityInc’s 2023 Top 50 Companies for Diversity.

Mandatory Training Sessions

Dow has implemented mandatory training sessions on unconscious bias and inclusive leadershipas part of its commitment to DEI. These sessions are designed to challenge stereotypes and promote equity within the workforce. It sounds good on paper, but anything mandatory can rub people wrong, especially regarding personal beliefs.

Support for LGBTQ+ Initiatives

Dow’s commitment to LGBTQ+ rights is one of the company’s most vocal areas. For 17 consecutive years, Dow has earned a perfect 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. In addition to its internal policies, Dow offers public support, sponsoring Pride events and other LGBTQ+ initiatives. It actively promotes these values in public forums. While some applaud this level of advocacy, others may feel it’s too much.

Marketing and Branding

Finally, let’s look at how Dow presents itself to the world. The company’s branding is heavily focused on social responsibility and environmental activism. Their 2023 INtersections Report highlights its progress on climate goals like reducing carbon emissions and promoting circular economy practices. While these initiatives might appeal to eco-conscious consumers, there’s another side.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Dow Inc. has made it clear that it is not just a leader in chemical manufacturing—it’s also deeply committed to advancing progressive causes. From its financial contributions to climate change activism to its DEI-driven hiring policies and support for LGBTQ+ rights, Dow is fully invested in the woke agenda. For some, this is a plus. For others, it’s a reason to seek alternatives.

Does Dow have woke marketing?

Bloomberg

How Dow Chemical Got Woke

On April 1, Dow Chemical will be spun off from DowDuPont Inc. to form an independent company. The move will be big for the corporate financiers behind it, and for the manufacturers around the world that put Dow’s chemicals in running shoes, mattresses, adult diapers, baby wipes, and many other products. But it will also be a bellwether for a great many other people.
