How woke is Dell Technologies?

Introduction

Dell Technologies, one of the big players in the tech industry, has been making waves for years. But how does this giant stack up to embrace woke ideologies? In this review, I’m digging into whether Dell’s commitment to progressive causes, diversity, and LGBTQ+ initiatives is genuine or if they’re just jumping on the latest trend. With a bit of research and a critical eye, let’s see if Dell is truly walking the woke walk or just talking the talk.

Financial Contributions to Progressive Causes

Dell Technologies has shown some involvement in political and social causes, but it’s a mixed bag. Dell’s Political Action Committee (PAC) handed out about $58,309 in 2020 for Democratic and Republican candidates. This hints at a desire to stay relevant in the woke conversation without fully committing to one side.

Interestingly, there’s a report from Channel Futures about Dell’s record growth in its channel sales sector. No evidence shows they’re funneling any of that growth toward social justice or climate change activism. It’s almost like they’re saying, “We care,” but not quite enough. 

Prioritization of DEI Policies

Dell Technologies’s participation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has always been general knowledge.  Martin Maštalír,  one of Dell’s own, declared that “DEI is a core value of Dell’s culture, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all employees feel a sense of belonging.” The company’s diversity policies also make a big deal about their diversity hiring practices and resource groups for minority employees. 

Mandatory Training Sessions

There isn’t any public information about whether Dell is holding those ever-so-popular training sessions on topics like unconscious bias or critical race theory. However, companies vocal about DEI often have some form of these sessions tucked away in their employee handbooks. Either Dell is keeping it on the down-low, or they are not committed to this aspect of being woke.

Support for LGBTQ+ Initiatives

This is where Dell rolls out the rainbow carpet as they’ve been loud and proud about supporting LGBTQ+ rights. They’re committed to supporting LGBTQ+ team members “all year long.”

Dell has also earned recognition as an LGBTQ-friendly workplace in Taiwan, showing that this is a global effort, not just American-centric. 

Marketing and Branding

Dell’s marketing strategy reflects the brand’s evolution to include messaging around sustainability, diversity, and inclusion, incorporating elements of social justice and environmental concerns.  

Conclusion

Dell Technologies ticks woke boxes, from DEI policies to its LGBTQ+ support. Are they genuinely committed to progressive causes, or are they just reading the room and cashing in on a woke image? For those who prefer brands that stick to traditional values, Dell might not be your cup of tea.
