Shoppers type the same question every fall: puffy shell or duck canvas? On the BuyWokeFree index the gap is not close. The North Face still lands at 100/100 (extremely woke, content in review). Carhartt lands at 30/100 (mildly woke, content in review). That is a 70-point spread between VF Corporation's flagship outdoor brand and the Dearborn workwear house that still outfits the jobsite. Taste is a fight. The paper trail is not.
Why This Matchup Matters in 2026
These two jackets sit in the same closet for a lot of American men. North Face is the trail, the airport, the stadium parking lot. Carhartt is the farm, the shop floor, the deer lease. Conservatives already ran the 2022 Carhartt vaccine-mandate boycott. They already ran the North Face Pride-in-the-woods boycott. What they have not had is a scored, side-by-side card that uses the actual BuyWokeFree numbers instead of vibes.
If you want a wider aisle after this, start with our non-woke footwear and apparel brands map, the non-woke hunting and outdoor recreation list, and non-woke apparel and accessories. Ranch shoppers who want a zero can skip both names and go to Ariat at 0/100.
The Scoreboard
- The North Face — 100/100 (extremely woke) — Score rides the parent. VF Corp still carried a verified 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index in 2026, as listed on HRC's employer page. VF is a CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion signatory, publishes formal ESG reporting, and runs an IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Action) program. The brand itself became a culture-war flashpoint with the 2022 Summer of Pride campaign featuring drag performer Pattie Gonia, plus a UK promotion that offered a 20 percent discount tied to a racial-inclusion course covering allyship and white privilege, as reported at the time by The Times of London.
- Carhartt — 30/100 (mildly woke) — Privately held workwear. No public HRC Corporate Equality Index participation. Not a CEO Action signatory. Minimal visible Pride-sponsorship spending on our card. The 30 is not a hall pass: Carhartt still publishes sustainability and corporate-responsibility content, has listed DEI language on its corporate site, and became a 2022 boycott target when then-CEO Mark Valade defended a COVID vaccine mandate for employees. That history is why it is not a zero.
The North Face: Perfect Score, Parent Company Receipts
Do not grade The North Face as a cute San Francisco shell company. Grade VF. Denver-based VF still owns The North Face, Vans, and Timberland. HRC's 2026 employer listing for VF Corp showed a verified score of 100 across workforce protections, inclusive benefits, culture, and outreach. That is not a 2023 screenshot. That is the current index year, after Fortune 500 CEI participation collapsed from 377 companies in 2025 to 131 in 2026, as Fox News reported from the HRC 2026 report. VF did not take the off-ramp.
The six-criteria stack on our North Face card is the full activist kit:
- CEI: Parent VF, verified 100 in 2026.
- CEO Action: VF is a listed Diversity & Inclusion pledge signatory.
- ESG: Comprehensive parent-level sustainability reporting.
- DEI / IDEA: Formal Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Action program at VF.
- Pride: 2022 Summer of Pride with Pattie Gonia; Explore Fund grants to LGBTQ outdoor groups including OutdoorLads, Queer Nature, Brave Trails, and YouthSeen, as VF has publicly described in prior HRC-cycle coverage.
- Marketing politics: The UK racial-inclusion discount was not a rumor. It was a branded course-for-coupon stunt that the British tabloids labeled "Wokewear." VF did not Bud-Light this. It doubled down at the time.
2026 business news does not wash that off. VF's latest year showed The North Face back in growth, including an eight-year U.S. Ski & Snowboard apparel deal through the 2034 Utah Games, as Sports Business Journal reported in May 2026. Revenue recovery is not a woke-score reset. Nike still scores 75 after an S&P 100 exit. North Face still scores 100 after a good quarter.
Carhartt: The 2022 Boycott, Then a Mild Score
Carhartt's rural customer base already voted with its wallet once. In January 2022 the company mandated COVID vaccination for U.S. employees. CEO Mark Valade framed it as a safe workplace. The boycott was real. The score today is still only 30, because the rest of the activist stack never matched North Face.
On our six-criteria read:
- CEI: No public HRC survey participation — the same off-ramp Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Harley-Davidson, and Target took, except Carhartt was never a CEI trophy brand.
- CEO Action: Not a signatory.
- Pride: No material parade-sponsor receipt on the card.
- ESG: Supplier social-responsibility manuals and human-rights language (ILO-style discrimination bans, forced-labor rules). That is compliance paperwork, not a Pride capsule.
- DEI: Historical corporate DEI copy and inclusive marketing keep it off a zero. Treat that as listed language, not a 2026 HRC 100.
- Flashpoint: The 2022 mandate is the conservative memory. It is not a 2026 Pride float.
Current-status check, not folklore: Carhartt in 2026 is talking skilled-trades shortages and a Ford training partnership with CEO Linda Hubbard, as covered by Yahoo Finance in January 2026. That is jobs messaging, not a racial-inclusion coupon. Watchdogs have still named Carhartt on "Woke 1.0 still alive" lists alongside 7-Eleven and Nike. A list is an allegation of residual programming, not a new filing. Our 30 already prices residual DEI language without pretending Carhartt is VF.
The Six-Criteria Gap, In One Table
North Face inherits VF's perfect HRC year, the IDEA bureaucracy, Pride campaign history, and CEO Action ink. Carhartt inherits a blue-collar brand, a 2022 HR fight, and a much thinner activist file. If you only remember one number: 100 versus 30.
Do not confuse "less woke" with "not woke." Thirty is mildly woke. Patagonia also sits at 30/100 as a published brand, and it told CNBC in February 2025 it would not roll back justice, equity, and antiracism policies. Same integer, different story. Patagonia is the outdoor activist that refused the retreat. Carhartt is the workwear brand that never built the full stack. Read the write-up, not just the badge.
Verdict
Carhartt is less woke. Seventy points less. If the choice is a North Face nuptse-class puffer versus a Carhartt Detroit jacket, the scored answer is Carhartt. If you want a published zero in the same closet, Ariat is the ranch-apparel off-ramp at 0/100. Sneaker shoppers who already bounced from Nike can stay on New Balance at 20/100.
Two caveats, because accuracy is the product. Both North Face and Carhartt are in content review on our site — the scores are live, the long-form cards are still being tightened. And 2024–2026 really did see a broad corporate DEI retreat: many companies quit the HRC index, folded ERGs, and renamed programs. VF did not quit. That is why The North Face is still a 100 while half of the Fortune 500 stopped turning in the survey. A quiet website is not a clean scorecard. Check the number, then buy the jacket.
