Delta Took 212,900 Views' Worth of Heat This Week
On July 20, a post flagging Delta Air Lines' "underrepresented groups" hiring language ran to 212,900 views and 14,800 likes — one of the biggest corporate-DEI stories on X this week. The obvious move is to call Delta the worst offender in the sky and move on.
We are not going to do that, because our own database says otherwise. Delta scores 52/100 — Woke on the BuyWokeFree index. That is a real score, and it is a bad one. It is also, by a wide margin, the lowest score of any major U.S. airline we track. Both things are true, and the second one is the story nobody is telling you.
First, the Case Against Delta Is Real
Delta did not get a 52 by accident. What separates it from most of corporate America is not that it never went woke — it is that it refused to walk it back when everyone else did.
- It publicly refused to retreat. While Target, Walmart, Amazon and McDonald's scaled back diversity programs in 2024–2025, Delta's chief external affairs officer Peter Carter said in February 2025 that the airline was "steadfast" in its DEI commitments, and CEO Ed Bastian defended the programs as "merit-based" after executive orders targeting corporate DEI. Skift reported that Delta and Southwest were the only major U.S. airlines to keep DEI statements in their most recent annual reports.
- The 2026 proxy still counts diversity. A May 2026 analysis by the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative watchdog, found Delta's proxy statement still defines board diversity as "racial, ethnic and gender diversity" and counts eight of fourteen director nominees as diverse — even as more than 200 S&P 500 companies scrubbed that language.
- The infrastructure is still live. Delta's website still hosts a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion page promoting twelve Business Resource Groups with roughly 35,000 members, including the LGBTQ+ group EQUAL. Delta's own ESG materials describe inviting students "from underrepresented groups" to fly with crews — which is exactly where this week's viral hiring-language story comes from.
- Pride and politics. Delta was the presenting sponsor of the 2025 Atlanta Pride parade. In March 2021, Bastian called Georgia's election law "unacceptable" and "based on a lie," prompting a presidential call to boycott the airline.
- $1 billion on climate. Delta committed $1 billion over ten years toward carbon neutrality by 2050, with full ESG reporting to match.
One counter-signal, and we report it because it cuts our way and we still report it: the Human Rights Campaign lists Delta as a non-participant in its 2026 Corporate Equality Index, showing an unverified 25/100 because Delta did not submit the survey. That is a long-standing choice rather than a fresh retreat — but it is a genuine gap between Delta and its competitors, and it is a real part of why the score is 52 instead of 80.
Now the Part That Will Annoy Everyone
Here is the full Air Transportation ladder from our index. Read it twice.
- Southwest Airlines — 100/100. A perfect score across every dimension we measure: ESG/CSR One Report, DEIB programs, official LGBTQ+ community sponsor, a perfect HRC Corporate Equality Index score for nine-plus years, political spending, and a CEO publicly defending DEI. One hundred out of one hundred. There is no higher score.
- Alaska Airlines — 90/100. Official airline of Seattle Pride, the first-ever Pride plane, sponsorships across seven-plus cities, perfect HRC CEI scores, published diversity hiring goals, CEO Action pledge member.
- American Airlines Group — 71/100. Extremely woke.
- Delta Air Lines — 52/100. The one that went viral this week.
Delta is the story because someone posted a screenshot. Southwest is at a perfect hundred and nobody posted anything. That gap — between which brand gets dunked on and which brand actually scores worst — is the entire reason this website exists.
What This Means If You Actually Fly
The honest answer for conservative travelers is uncomfortable: there is no woke-free major U.S. airline. Every national carrier we have scored lands in Woke or Extremely Woke territory. This is not a category where you get to shop your way out — it is a category where four companies converged on the same corporate playbook and left you choosing between degrees.
If you want a real woke-free option in the air, it exists, but it is not a legacy carrier: Boomerang Air Charter scores 3/100, an openly Christ-centered private-charter operation in Jacksonville with no ESG theater, no DEI mandates, no Pride marketing and no partisan donations. That is what a 3 looks like. It is also a charter company, which most people booking a Tuesday flight to Denver cannot use. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend a major airline is something it isn't. Browse the rest of the Transportation category to see how far the scores fall once you leave the majors.
A Score Is a Claim You Can Check
Delta earned its 52. It kept its DEI apparatus when the rest of corporate America was quietly deleting theirs, and this week's viral post is a fair hit on real language from Delta's own materials. Nothing here is a defense of Delta.
But "Delta is the woke airline" is a vibe, and the vibe is wrong. Delta is the least woke of the majors, and it is not close — 52 against a 100, a 90 and a 71. If you boycott Delta and connect through Southwest, you traded down by 48 points and felt good doing it.
That is what happens when outrage picks the target instead of the receipts. We publish the number so you can check it — including the times the number says something you did not want to hear.
