Alaska Airlines scores 90 out of 100 on the Buy Woke Free woke scale, making it one of the most aggressively woke airlines in America. The carrier is the official airline of Seattle Pride and became the first U.S. airline to fly a Pride-inspired aircraft, which flew throughout its network for a year. Alaska Airlines sponsors Pride parades in at least seven cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu, Anchorage, San Diego, Portland, and Palm Springs, and partners with the Human Rights Campaign and Lambda Legal for LGBTQ+ advocacy. The airline achieved a perfect 100 on the HRC Corporate Equality Index in the 2023-2024 and 2026 surveys.

In 2021, Alaska Airlines set explicit DEI diversity hiring objectives, including a goal of 30% racial diversity at all levels by 2025. The company expanded its True North Pilot Development Program to include diverse educational institutions and launched the Ascend Pilot Academy with significant diversity quotas. Alaska operates 13 employee-led Business Resource Groups and created the STEP (Student Talent and Exploration Partnership) program to provide high school students with industry exposure. CEO Brad Tilden was one of the first 100 CEOs to sign the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion pledge.

The airline found itself at the center of a national DEI controversy in January 2024 when an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX suffered a fuselage panel blowout mid-flight. While the incident was traced to Boeing manufacturing errors, conservative commentators including Elon Musk used the incident to warn that "people will die due to DEI," linking diversity hiring practices at airlines and Boeing to safety concerns. Alaska Airlines publishes annual sustainability reports and has committed to net-zero emissions by 2040. Despite airlines industry-wide toning down DEI language in annual reports under Trump administration pressure, Alaska's underlying DEI programs and Pride sponsorships remain firmly in place.
