Is Converse Woke? It Scores 25. Nike Still Scores 75.

By BuyWokeFree Editorial

Is Converse Woke?

Yes, mildly. Converse is published in the BuyWokeFree database at 25 out of 100, label mildly woke. That number is not a hand-me-down from parent Nike, which remains 75, extremely woke. The September ad apology did not write the score. A 2026 Pride shoe did.

Nike owns Converse, so shoppers assume the Chuck Taylor inherited a 75. It did not. We score the brand on the shoe you are holding, from filings and products tied to that name. Copying 75 onto every Nike subsidiary would turn this database into a logo chart. Converse earned 25 on its own row. Nike kept 75 on its own. Both are published. A loud week does not move either one.

Why the Score Is 25, Not 75

The 25 is a Pride-product score. Converse's own site still sells a 2026 Custom Chuck Taylor All Star Lift Platform Pride By You, with pride-flag patches and the line "STILL PROUD TO BE." That receipt is current, and it is on the brand's site. No rumor thread required.

What we did not award is the rest of the row. ESG reporting, a named DEI function, a verified HRC Corporate Equality Index 100, left-leaning PAC giving, and CEO Action for Diversity are not on the Converse filings behind this score. Those are the dimensions that push household names into the 70s and the 100s. They are absent here, so they are not inside the 25. If a later Converse filing shows them, the score moves. Until then, we do not borrow Nike's paperwork to punish a Chuck Taylor by association.

On the Converse scoring note, parent Nike kept a 2026 HRC CEI 100 on its own row, and that figure was not copied down. Nike's published 75 is a separate profile: comprehensive ESG reporting, formal DEI programs, Pride sponsorship through the Be True collection and the No Pride No Sport campaign, heavy Democratic PAC giving, and CEO Action participation. An extremely woke parent is not an automatic extremely woke child. The gap between 25 and 75 is why they are scored apart.

The Pulled Ad Is Not the Score

CNN and the Associated Press reported on September 20, 2026, that Converse apologized and pulled a Karina sneaker ad after critics said the image evoked a KKK hood and a lynching. Cite the critics, the apology, and the removal. Do not adopt that reading as our claim. A creative controversy can be real and still sit outside the six scoring dimensions. No verified boycott dollar figure was attached to the pull, so this piece will not invent one. The ad is context. The Pride shoe is the point. Pulling a creative does not subtract points the product already earned, and it does not add new ones.

Nike's 75, With the Receipt Attached

Nike left the S&P 100 on September 21, 2026, after almost 18 years. It is still in the S&P 500. Do not collapse those two indexes. Fortune reported on September 8, 2026, that Nike had lost over $200 billion in market cap since the 2021 high, and about 36 percent in 2026 alone. The $200 billion is off the 2021 peak, not a one-week wipeout. We are not quoting a share price. The woke score is still 75. An index exit is a market receipt. It is not a rescore, and it does not drip down onto Converse.

Where 25 Sits in the Aisle

A lone 25 is useless until you can see the brands next to it. These are published scores.

  • Nike — 75, extremely woke. The parent. The number people assume Converse inherited.
  • ASICS — 45, woke. Gold in Japan's PRIDE Index for seven consecutive years, with the 2025 result announced November 17. Pride Run and Walk events across fifteen regions, a Pride House Tokyo sponsorship, and public targets for women in management. No US PAC, no verified HRC CEI, and no consumer-facing Pride marketing on the published row. Higher than Converse for workplace receipts Converse's row does not carry.
  • HOKA — 42, woke. A Deckers brand. Published breakdown: ESG 6/10, DEI 6/10, Pride 10/25 for a PRISM employee group, an estimated CEI around 40 rather than a verified 100, light political giving, and a moderate CEO Action mark.
  • Skechers — 35, woke. Mostly conventional environmental reporting. No confirmed HRC CEI 100 and no corporate PAC on the row. Taken private in 2025 by 3G Capital. A reported Pride shoe could not be independently verified, so it is not in the score. Converse is the opposite case: the Pride product is on the brand's own site.
  • Converse — 25, mildly woke. Pride shoe verified. Parent's 75 not copied. Pulled ad not a point.
  • New Balance — 20, mildly woke. Privately held, Boston, known for Made-in-USA factories. No Pride campaigns and no perfect HRC score on the published row. Modest ESG reporting and an "Empowering People" DE&I platform keep it off zero. Owner Jim Davis gave $500,000 to the GOP Senate Leadership Fund in October 2024. That donation is in the scoring note. It does not zero the brand, and it does not make 20 "not woke."

The last woke-free sneaker is not in this set. Non-Woke Footwear and Apparel Brands is the shelf to keep walking. New Balance is the lowest published number among the household names above. Mildly woke is still a score.

Same Week, Different Receipt

Receipts moved this week. Published scores did not. Starbucks is still 100, extremely woke, after about 250 of its 18,000-plus North American cafes closed and about $300 million in restructuring charges, as CNBC reported on September 24, 2026. About $200 million of that is leases and separation benefits. About $100 million is noncash. Most closures fall before fiscal year-end. It is the second North America closure round under Brian Niccol. A separate Florida settlement was $1 million to the Florida Department of Legal Affairs, with no race- and sex-based goals, quotas, or preferences companywide, and a chief legal officer certifying compliance for four years, as Fox News reported. We are not inventing that article's date. The settlement does not auto-rescore a 100.

Do not turn the union fight into a DEI morality play. Reported demands have centered on a wage floor, staffing, and protections. Starbucks Workers United has said DEI cuts are happening as a boycott grows. That is not the same claim as "they boycotted because DEI was purged."

The Verdict

Converse is mildly woke. Twenty-five is the honest number, and it is now a published row, not a blank. Seventy-five belongs to Nike until Converse's own filings earn it. The pulled Karina ad is a dated act: critics, an apology, a removal. It is not a piece of the score, and it is not proof the Pride shoe disappeared. If that product is your line, 25 is already enough to switch. If you want the lower published score in the same aisle, start with New Balance at 20, then keep walking the footwear category before you call any pair woke-free.
