Is Anthropic Woke? It Scores 35/100 — Then the NY Post Called It Super-Woke

By BuyWokeFree Editorial

The New York Post put Anthropic on the cover as a nest of "super-woke globalists." The Radar residual is still sitting there: 991.3K views and 7,915 likes on the Post's Woke Pulse post. That is a lot of heat for a company that does not sell sneakers. It is also a terrible way to shop.

On BuyWokeFree, Anthropic scores 35/100 — labeled woke, not extremely woke. That is not a hall pass. It is also not Apple at 100 or Microsoft at 100. If you treat a newspaper cover like a scorecard, you will boycott the 35 and keep paying the 100s.

What a 35 actually means

Anthropic's published summary is blunt. The company publishes no DEI data and runs no visible DEI or Pride programming. It is not collecting a perfect HRC Corporate Equality Index trophy the way the old Fortune 500 class did. A $20 million check went to Public First Action, a bipartisan 501(c)(4) restricted to public education — not a Pride parade float.

The political lean of the people is real. Co-founders have given about $265,000, all to Democrats. CEO Dario Amodei personally gave $1 million in May 2026 to an affiliated super PAC that backed a Democrat in a New York primary. That is why 35 is not a zero. Campaign cash and founder class still count. What does not count is pretending Claude's parent is the same animal as a retailer with twenty years of perfect CEI scores and a Pride collection on the homepage.

BWF scores six doors: ESG reporting, DEI programs, Pride sponsorship, HRC CEI participation, political money, and CEO Action-style pledges. Anthropic fails the "clean" test on founder-class Democrats and that super PAC check. It does not fail the same way Apple fails, with annual Pride merch and a shareholder vote that crushed an anti-DEI proposal 97 to 3. Mixing those two stories is how you get a 991K-view argument and a useless cart.

The cover vs the criteria

As reported by the New York Post on September 15, 2026, Amodei argued in an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier" that leading AI firms should let embedded third-party evaluators from a nonprofit called METR — Model Evaluation and Threat Research — keep "employee-like access" to oversee safety. The Post's frame: the watchdog traces to Effective Altruism networks, open-borders quotes, and Amodei's old orbit. Treat that as the Post's reporting, not a BWF audit of METR's payroll.

A follow-on Post opinion on September 17 went further, arguing the nearer risk is a "DEI-drenched soul" in the model and naming Anthropic's personality-alignment work. We are not going to certify a chatbot's inner life from a column. We will say this: culture-war coverage of AI is now a 991K-view product. The scorecard still asks whether the company runs Pride sponsorship, DEI programs, ESG reports, HRC participation, and partisan money — the same six doors every other brand walks through.

Amodei's slowdown essay, as reported by the New York Times on September 12, 2026, was a 3,800-word call to pace capabilities so safety work could keep up. That is a policy fight inside the AI labs. It is not a receipt that Anthropic suddenly scored 100. If your rule is "whoever the Post covers this week is the woke brand," you will never keep a stable list, and the 100s in your pocket will laugh.

Apple 100 and Microsoft 100 did not get the cover

If you live in the technology aisle, the household names are still the 100s. Apple scores a perfect 100: ESG reports, a public DEI defense, annual Pride collections, a perfect HRC CEI run measured in decades, heavy Democratic giving, and a CEO Action signature. Microsoft is the same 100 on all six dimensions: sustainability reports, a Global D&I division, Pride campaigns, a perfect CEI score, $25 million-plus in political spending, and the CEO Action pledge.

Those are the companies most families already pay every month — phones, Office, cloud. Anthropic is the one that caught a tabloid lightning bolt because a CEO wrote a slowdown essay and the Post put "woke wizards" on the cover. Heat is not the same as a 100. The 7-day Radar stack this morning still had Woke Pulse at 954.4K and Brands Talk at a thin 6,658. Culture explainers travel. Scorecards do not, unless you publish them.

OpenAI is the other AI foil — and it scores 28

In the artificial intelligence lane, OpenAI scores 28/100 — mildly woke. It scrubbed a "Commitment to DEI" page in early 2025 and has kept that language off the site. It says it has never given to a super PAC or campaign, spending on lobbying instead. Sam Altman called himself "politically homeless" in July 2025 and showed up at the White House for the Stargate launch. Residual concern in our file is founder-class money — president Greg Brockman personally put $25 million into the Leading the Future super PAC network, which OpenAI has publicly disclaimed.

So the AI shelf, scored: OpenAI 28, Anthropic 35, then a jump to the old-guard 100s. That is the shopping fact. It will not trend like a cover. It will save you from treating every "woke AI" headline as a 100. If you want the least-woke lab on our board today, the integer says OpenAI, not a boycott of Claude that leaves ChatGPT, iCloud, and Copilot untouched.

The Pentagon fight is a legal receipt, not a Pride float

Conservative criticism of Anthropic in our file centers on "regulatory capture" more than rainbow merch. The Pentagon branded it "woke AI" in a dispute over military-use limits; a federal judge called the government's move illegal First Amendment retaliation. That is a process fight. It is not proof the company is running a Be True collection. Do not flatten a contract spat into a consumer boycott slogan unless you also boycott every contractor that ever fought the building.

Same rule as last night's Nike note, in a different aisle: demotion is not absolution, and a headline is not a score. Amazon still sits at 100 on every BWF dimension, including Pride sponsorship and a perfect CEI mark. If your AI outrage stops at Claude and never reaches Prime, you are shopping the viral object, not the database.

How to read this without getting played

  • Quote the number: Anthropic is 35, not 100.
  • Attribute the cover: the Post said "super-woke"; our six-criteria file says woke, with founder-class Democratic money and no visible Pride or DEI program.
  • Compare the aisle: OpenAI 28, Anthropic 35, Apple 100, Microsoft 100, Amazon 100.
  • Do not launder a 991K view count into a new score. Views are not criteria.
  • Use the category maps: internet and web services still houses the 100-score giants most households already pay.

BuyWokeFree exists so you do not have to take the loudest cover as gospel. The technology giants still occupy the 100 slot. Anthropic occupies 35. If you want less woke software, start with the integers, not the headline.
