How woke is Ford Motor?

Ford Motor Company, a household name and American icon, has existed for over a century. Lately, however, Ford has turned left into the progressive lane. 

Let’s dig into Ford’s stance on woke policies and see if this classic brand is still driving with all its values intact.

Financial Contributions to Progressive Causes

Ford’s financial history shows it’s been spending a fair amount on progressive causes. Ford proudly announces its dedication to advancing social justice through community programs that address racial equity and inclusion. And let’s not forget about Ford’s push for environmental causes. In their 2023 Integrated Sustainability and Financial Report, Ford clarifies: “Our commitment to sustainability includes an emphasis on climate change activism and reducing our carbon footprint while also supporting communities affected by environmental challenges.” 

OpenSecrets also notes Ford’s business in Washington. In recent years, Ford has spent over $9 million on federal lobbying, with a significant portion directed towards progressive causes like climate change and social justice.

Prioritization of DEI Policies

For a long time, Ford has embraced DEI Initiatives in the workplace. Surprisingly, Ford is starting to pump the brakes on some of that progressive momentum. Fox Business recently called them out, stating that “Ford walks back woke DEI policies, joining a growing list of US companies re-evaluating their approach to diversity and inclusion amidst rising societal backlash.” USA Today pointed out that “Ford is facing a crossroads as it balances a commitment to diversity against pushback from various sectors of society.” 

However, Ford hasn’t completely backed down. They’re still discussing inclusivity on their Careers Page. They state their dedication to cultivating an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. So, while Ford may be dialing down the DEI rhetoric a notch, they haven’t abandoned ship entirely. 

Mandatory Training Sessions

There is no information about Ford’s enforcement of mandatory employee training sessions. Either it is not practiced, or the details are unavailable to avoid more criticism. Let’s say the details are as elusive as a unicorn right now.

Support for LGBTQ+ Initiatives

Ford has been cruising down the LGBTQ+ lane for a while, but even this journey has seen some bumps recently. The Pink News highlights that “Ford had been a champion for LGBTQ+ rights, but recent decisions signal that the automaker might be stepping away from some of its most inclusive policies.”
