The 1.1 million-view label fight
On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, BuyWokeFree's Radar Boycott Tracker ceiling was cheese — not Nike, not Target, not soda. Al Jazeera English's report on critics launching a boycott of Tillamook over a halal labelling mark cleared 1.1 million views and 937 likes — the first multi-million brand-SKU boycott wave of the week. This one had a package you can pick up at the store.
Tillamook's own FAQ is blunt: the majority of our cheeses are halal certified, and shoppers are told to look for the symbol on the pack. Ice cream is not certified halal. Yogurt, sour cream, butter, and cream cheese spreads are not certified either, though the company calls those vegetarian. Frozen meals are not certified and sometimes contain meat. International Business Times, citing the company's line, reports that Tillamook switched most cheeses to fermentation-produced rennet in 2016 — vegetarian, and carrying both kosher and halal certification — and that Maker's Reserve 10-Year Extra Sharp Cheddar is an exception because it still uses animal rennet. A logo appearing on a 2026 shelf is not, by itself, proof of a brand-new recipe overhaul this month.
Accuracy first: Al Jazeera also reported that some critics used a viral slur tying the cheese to terrorism. That language is abuse, not a verified product fact, and we will not repeat it as if it were a finding. Shoppers can object to a religious certification mark on a mainstream American SKU without inventing a conspiracy. The decision that matters for a scorecard is the labelling decision plus the corporate file underneath it.
The score was already 20
BuyWokeFree scores Tillamook 20/100 — mildly woke — and the brand is published. It is a genuine 1909 Oregon farmer-owned cooperative (Tillamook County Creamery Association), with a giving policy that bans political donations and no consumer-facing Pride marketing in our file. That is why it is not a 70, and not a 100. The deductions that keep it off zero are an imported corporate DEI framework, identity-sorted All For Farmers grants, B Corp certification — the company's own site still identifies TCCA as a certified B Corp — and a 95, short of a perfect 100, on the HRC's 2025 Corporate Equality Index.
That is the punchline. A 1.1 million-view wave did not "discover" a radical activist brand. The register already had a mild score with a farmer-coop core and a corporate overlay. If you only showed up when the mark went viral, you are late.
The dairy aisle is not a blank slate
Shoppers who want a non-woke dairy products map still have to compare real scored names. The category page is the shopping list. The boycott clip is the alarm.
Kraft Heinz sits at 80/100 (extremely woke) in content_review — annual ESG reporting, a perfect HRC Corporate Equality Index 100, DEI hiring aspirations, an LGBTQ+ employee resource group, Pride-related outreach, and a left-leaning political contribution pattern in our breakdown. If the objection is "I do not want a politicized food conglomerate," Kraft Heinz is the heavier file. It is also the household name on the same refrigerated wall.
Chobani scores 45/100 (woke), also content_review: LGBTQ+ marketing, HRC listing, foundational DEI programming, ESG/human-rights policy language, and a founder known for progressive causes. CEO Action signatory status and a confirmed HRC 100 could not be verified from public sources in that file, which is why 45 is not 80. Yogurt shoppers treating Chobani as the "clean" alternate to Tillamook cheddar are shopping a different product and a higher score.
Ice cream is the other dairy foil already in the database. Ben & Jerry's is published at 70/100. Unilever, the parent foil when that story returns, is 90 in content_review. A cheese boycott that migrates to activist ice cream is not a wallet upgrade.
Where you actually buy the block
Most Americans do not drive to Tillamook County. They buy cheddar at a grocery store. Walmart is published at 90/100 despite a late-2024 DEI rollback: years of ESG reporting, a $100 million racial-equity commitment, Platinum-level Pride sponsorships, perfect HRC CEI scores, and CEO Action signatory status still sit in the file. Quiet cut is not a clean score.
Whole Foods Market is 80/100 in content_review — Amazon-era sustainability and animal-welfare programs, long-standing D&I programming, recurring Pride collections, and 16-plus consecutive years of a perfect HRC CEI 100. Radar also picked up a Code Pink Dead Sea salt BDS call at 53.5K views. That is not today's 1.1 million cheese story, and it is not a reason to treat Whole Foods as the "ethical" dairy Status: content_review, not a finished published card.
The low-score grocery foil on the same brief is Trader Joe's at 20/100 (content_review) — privately held, no ESG report in our file, no public Pride merchandising, not HRC-rated, with a reported 2025 de-emphasis of DEI and only a political-contribution bump keeping it off zero. Same numeric band as Tillamook. Different company. If your rule is "mild score, skip the religious certification fight," that is a store-level choice, not a proof that Tillamook just became Kraft Heinz overnight.
What this is not
- It is not a consumer boycott of CNN. Radar's TV-pool "boycott" clips cleared hundreds of thousands of views; those are media-process stories, not dairy SKUs.
- It is not a Nike recycle. Converse's apology and Nike's S&P 100 deletion (effective before the open Monday, September 21, 2026; Nike remains in the S&P 500) are still a web spine. They were off Radar Top today. Do not launder yesterday's sneaker views into a cheese headline.
- It is not proof that "DEI is cheese." Kamala Harris's "DEI is under attack / maternal care" cluster owned the DEI Watch tab (Polymarket 481.7K, RNC Research 475.1K). That is political theater. Tillamook is a labelled package with a 20 on the card.
How to shop it
Read the pack. Tillamook told you the majority of cheeses are halal certified and that the symbol is on the package. If that certification is a conscience issue, stop buying those SKUs — including the ones that have carried the enzyme change since 2016, whether or not you noticed the mark last week. If your issue is the woke file, you already had a 20: farmer co-op, no Pride aisle stunt, plus DEI/B Corp/HRC overlay. That is a mild score, not a last-brand-standing zero like regional sodas sitting at 0.
Then walk the dairy-products list and the grocery list before you congratulate yourself for "switching." Kraft Heinz at 80, Chobani at 45, Ben & Jerry's at 70, and Whole Foods at 80 are not upgrades. Trader Joe's at 20 is a same-band grocery foil, still in content_review. Tillamook at 20 remains the brand the 1.1 million views actually named.
Corporations keep discovering the register has a longer memory than the press release. This time the press release is a certification mark, the clip is 1.1 million views, and the memory is a score that was already 20.
