Buc-ee's scores 0/100 on the BWF Woke Index — published, not_woke, and the cleanest travel-stop zero we have. The news that made that score useful this week is a boycott threat, not a Pride float. A clip from @EricLDaugh (Aug 30) logged 1 million views and 56.2K likes on BuyWokeFree Radar after CEO Arch "Beaver" Aplin III said the chain prefers conservative, business-friendly states. Snopes rated the quote Correct Attribution on Sept. 1, 2026. That is not a vibe. That is a scored aisle under real heat.
Why a 0/100 Beaver Matters This Week
BuyWokeFree's job is not to narrate every viral DEI clip. It is to tell you which scored brands you can actually buy. Wednesday's trend brief listed Buc-ee's as the cleanest new BUY THIS INSTEAD winner under a left boycott threat. We had never given the chain its own deep-dive. That is the gap this post closes.
The remark landed at the Aug. 17, 2026 opening of Buc-ee's first Arkansas store in Benton, with Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders introducing Aplin. As reported by Daily Wire (Aug. 28) and Newsweek (Aug. 31), Aplin said: "We're building in a lot of places, but when you find a conservative, business-friendly state with a phenomenal workforce, it makes a difference." He added that "life's too short to try and build in places that people don't appreciate what you're bringing." Axios Chicago (Aug. 27) reported Illinois pushback and that Buc-ee's representatives said the company has no plans to open there. Frame the Illinois claim as reported. Do not invent a nationwide blue-state ban — Buc-ee's already operates in Colorado and Virginia, and reporting still lists competitive-state projects including Wisconsin.
The Score, Not the Meme
Buc-ee's 0/100 is not a fan-forum rating. On our scale it is a floor:
- ESG / sustainability reporting: 0
- DEI programs: 0
- Pride sponsorships: 0
- HRC Corporate Equality Index: 0 (not rated)
- CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion: 0
- Left-leaning political contributions: 0
Founder Arch Aplin III has donated over $4 million to Republican candidates since 2015. The 1792 Exchange rates the company Lower Risk. There is no HRC CEI participation to walk back, no Pride merch cycle to reverse, and no DEI office hiding under a Cultural Intelligence rename. The boycott is not a response to a new program. It is a response to a CEO saying out loud what the score already showed.
The Convenience-Store Ladder
If you are shopping the travel-stop aisle, the database already has a scored ladder — not a mood board. Start at Non-Woke Local Convenience Store Brands and the broader Retail map, then look at the household names we actually scored:
- Buc-ee's — 0/100, not_woke, published. No ESG report, no DEI program, no Pride, no HRC, no CEO Action.
- Sheetz — 45/100, woke, published. Formal IDEA program (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility) with an executive sponsor; Pride-branded support for True Colors United that we could not confirm is current; not HRC-rated; Sheetz Inc PAC giving ran roughly 83% Republican in the last complete FEC cycle. Progressive on workplace branding, conservative in the checkbook.
- 7-Eleven — 45/100, woke, published. Formal U.S. DEI strategy with Associate Business Resource Groups including 7-Pride, annual corporate Pride Month programming, and parent-company ESG reporting. Absent from HRC CEI 100 lists. Scaled Copenhagen Pride sponsorship back to a lower tier in 2025 — a process change, not a zero.
- Wawa — 70/100, woke, published. Live DEI section with ERGs and board-level oversight; Social Purpose ESG report. The widely repeated "perfect 100" HRC score is stale — Wawa did not submit a 2026 CEI survey, part of the roughly 65% collapse in Fortune 500 CEI participation. Long-running Philadelphia Pride sponsorship is no longer current per reporting, but the cumulative record still scores woke.
That is a 70-point spread in one aisle. Buc-ee's is not "less bad." It is a different animal.
What the Boycott Actually Is
Call the heat what it is. Aplin's Benton remarks were public, filmed, and correctly attributed. Left-coded boycott talk followed on X because a Texas travel-stop CEO declined to pretend geography is value-neutral. Radar also still shows a separate, older grievance: Buc-ee's trademark suits against smaller beaver-branded shops, including an Ohio mini-mart fight that has drawn its own boycott fundraising. Those are two different complaints. Do not mash them into one conspiracy. The scored fact for shoppers is simpler: the chain never built the DEI/Pride stack that 7-Eleven and Wawa did, and it is being punished for saying the quiet part.
Accuracy bar: Aplin did not announce a legal ban on Democratic states. He said conservative, business-friendly, family-oriented leadership "works so much better if it trickles down from the very top." Newsweek's Aug. 31 map of 24 planned locations tracked by Roadtrip Beaver found 22 in states that voted Republican in 2024 and two in Virginia. Axios notes the footprint "doesn't break neatly along partisan lines" and that Oak Creek, Wisconsin is still moving. Quote the CEO. Do not invent a red-only fortress.
Where the Receipts Sit
Wednesday's Radar numbers are the social proof, not the score:
- Buc-ee's boycott-threat post: @EricLDaugh — 1M views / 56.2K likes
- Live BWF score: Buc-ee's 0
- Same-aisle foils: 7-Eleven 45, Sheetz 45, Wawa 70
The checkout you can actually make on a road trip is Buc-ee's versus Wawa, not a fashion campaign. If you want the scored swap, it is already in the database.
The Verdict
Is Buc-ee's woke? No. It scores 0/100. The boycott talk is downstream of a CEO who would rather build where the workforce and the governor's office want the store. If your test is DEI offices, Pride months, and HRC surveys, this chain never sat for the exam. If your test is "will they apologize for preferring conservative states," you already have the clip — and you already have the score.
For the travel-stop run: skip the 70 and the 45s when a 0 is on the interstate. Check the Buc-ee's brand profile, then the convenience-store category, before you default to Wawa or 7-Eleven out of habit.
