Buy American is having a week. President Trump posted on Truth Social on Labor Day, September 7, 2026, that there should be "NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES" unless the Canadian planemaker builds here and stops treating America like a piggybank. Reuters, CNBC, and Aviation Week treated it as a live trade threat, not a meme. As of this writing there is no executive order, no tariff schedule, and no Federal Register date attached to the post. The heat is real. The paperwork is not.
Here is the part the flag-waving threads skip. Bombardier now sits in the BuyWokeFree database as a published brand at 45/100 — labeled woke, not not-woke. About 55% of its $9.6 billion in 2025 revenue came from the United States, according to reporting that cites the company. It names roughly 2,800 U.S. suppliers across 47 states and more than $2.5 billion a year in American supplier spend. Wings for the Global 8000 are built in Red Oak, Texas. That is a serious industrial footprint. It is not a clean score.
If you came here asking "is Bombardier woke?" the short answer is: more than a rollback shop, less than a perfect-100 culture machine.
What the 45 actually measures
We do not grade jets on thrust. We grade the company on the six-criteria BWF scale using what it publishes and what third-party indexes still show.
- ESG: 10. Formal sustainability plan and a 2025 Sustainability Report — a full ESG apparatus, not a one-page slogan.
- DEI: 10. Belonging and D&I forums, gender-parity certification, women-in-management targets. The diversity bureaucracy is still there.
- Pride: 25. BProud employee forum, 2025 Pride parade participation in Montreal and Queretaro, and multi-site Pride flag-raisings. This is the loudest slice of the 45.
- HRC CEI: 0. No verified perfect Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index score.
- Left PAC: 0. OpenSecrets for the 2024 cycle shows the giving mix leaning roughly 81% Republican.
- CEO Action: 0. Not verified as a CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion signatory.
Pride plus ESG plus DEI keeps Bombardier out of the woke-free aisle. GOP-leaning PAC data and a missing HRC 100 keep it out of the perfect-score club. That is a straddler, and straddlers are where shoppers get conned by vibes.
Buy American is not a hall pass
The company's Labor Day statement, reported by Aviation Week and CNBC, leaned on U.S. jobs: sites in Kansas, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, Delaware, California, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey; engines and avionics from American suppliers; a new Fort Wayne, Indiana facility later this year. Trump's post claimed the products "aren't good enough" while also complaining that Americans buy a lot of them. Both can be true in a trade fight. Neither rewrites the culture score.
Look at Boeing. It is the household name in aerospace and defense, and it scores a published 100/100. Boeing even dismantled its DEI department in November 2024 amid safety controversies. The score stayed at 100 because ESG reporting, Pride history, a perfect HRC CEI, heavy political spending, and CEO Action signatory status were already baked in. "We build here" did not wash it out. "We cut a department" did not either.
A Canadian jet maker with Texas wings and a 45 is not the same animal as a U.S. prime with a 100. It is also not the same animal as a company that actually tore out DEI and left the HRC index.
What a real rollback looks like
Harley-Davidson scores a published 10/100. It dropped its DEI function, exited the HRC Corporate Equality Index, and killed diversity spending goals in 2024 after public pressure. It still carries a thin sustainability program, which is why it is 10 instead of 0. A 10 is a different product than a 45 with Pride parades still on the calendar.
For another 45 that is not a published punchline, Jaguar sits at 45/100 in content review. Parent JLR still has documented ESG programs (Net Zero by 2039), a formal DEI program, and NYC Pride March sponsorship since 2022. This week's industrial news on that name is a turnaround cut: about 4,000 roles and £1.7 billion (~$2.3 billion) in savings over two years. Treat Jaguar as a caution row until the status flips.
Receipts worth quoting
- Trump Truth Social post: September 7, 2026. Demand: build in the U.S. or lose the market. No EO attached.
- U.S. share of 2025 revenue: about 55% of $9.6 billion, per reporting that cites Bombardier.
- Supplier spine: ~2,800 U.S. companies in 47 states; more than $2.5 billion a year in U.S. supplier spend.
- BWF score: 45/100, published. Pride 25 is the culture tell. Left PAC 0 is the political tell.
- Boeing comparison: 100/100 published, including after the 2024 DEI-department cut.
- Harley comparison: 10/100 published after a documented DEI and HRC exit.
If a thread tells you Bombardier is "woke-free because Texas," it is lying with a factory. If a thread tells you it is "just as woke as Boeing," it is lying with a flag. The spread is 55 points. That is the product.
How to shop this without getting played
Most readers will never bid on a Global 8000. The method still applies every time a politician says Buy American and a brand manager says that should settle the culture argument. Open Bombardier's live row first. Compare it to Boeing at 100, not to a vibes chart on X. If you care about the aisle, start at non-woke aerospace and defense brands and commercial aerospace — and do not assume the map is full of zeros. Treat content-review names like Jaguar as footnotes until they are published. When a company boasts 2,800 suppliers, ask what it still sponsors.
This week's other spikes — Nike still at 75 after an S&P 100 exit, Netflix at 95 in content review after a cancel wave — teach the same lesson: a news spike is not a rescore. We published Bombardier at 45 because the filings and the Pride calendar earned 45, not because a Truth Social post needed a mascot.
The verdict
Is Bombardier woke? On our scale, yes — mildly, at 45/100 — with a Pride-and-ESG core and a PAC profile that leans the other way. Should you confuse that with Boeing's 100? No. Should you confuse Texas wings and 47-state suppliers with a woke-free brand? Also no. Trump can demand they build more here. Shoppers can demand a score that matches the paperwork. Those are different fights, and only one of them belongs in your cart. Check the live number before you RT the next industrial dunk.
